Thursday, October 9, 2014 at 8:15 a.m., the second conference on leadership and diversity for NC State staff and faculty will convene in the
Riddick Hall Hearth.
Following on the success of the March 10 conference of similar theme, this conference will feature a slightly different format. Mr. Oscar Santos of BB&T University, BB&T’s leadership and professional development unit, will facilitate a high-energy, interactive morning workshop, followed by lunch and two afternoon break-out sessions of four individual programs each. A wrap-up activity focused on individual and collective action-planning will round out the day.
OIED Director of Staff Diversity Dr. Deb Luckadoo expressed excitement about the opportunity to work with Oscar Santos: “NC State has a long-time partnership with BB&T, particularly with the Poole College of Management. We were excited to learn that BB&T is pursuing the same type of welcoming, inclusive environment for its employees that NC State strives for, and that they are willing to share their resources with us to help the NC State community achieve that goal.”
Mr. Santos has been with BB&T since 2005, when he completed the Leadership Development Program. In 2012, he became part of the BB&T University Leadership team and was responsible for identifying performance gaps for LOBs within the Lending & Marketing group and supplementing those gaps with training opportunities. Today, he is responsible for the Leadership and Professional Development area for over 6,000 managers in the organization. Prior to BB&T, Oscar had the opportunity to manage his business in Puerto Rico, which he later sold when he and his wife decided to move to the U.S. He also worked as a sales representative for a global company developing businesses in the U.S., Central and South America.
In addition to the morning workshop, the afternoon break-out sessions will feature popular topics from the spring conference on leadership and diversity, such as Bohlman and Deal’s leadership framework, cross-cultural communication, personality type differences and creating a GLBT-friendly workplace. Plus, there will be new sessions on challenges unique to various communities in the university and language diversity. Conference participants will also examine a philosophical base for diversity at NC State and will have the opportunity to set goals and make action plans to enhance the workplace environment for everyone.
