Now Registering - Charting Your Path Workshop: Strategies for Success for Mid-Career Faculty

On May 12, 2014 from 10:00AM to 4:00PM at the Friday Institute on NC State's Centennial Campus, the Charting Your Path Workshop will focus on strategies for success for mid-career faculty, with particular emphasis on approaches for women and underrepresented minority faculty. Deborah DeZure, Assistant Provost for Faculty and Organizational Development, Michigan State University, will be the keynote speaker. Deborah DeZure, Roger Baldwin, and their research team at MSU were recipients of the 2007 Robert Menges Award for Outstanding Research in Faculty Development for their “Study of Mid Career Faculty: Implications for Practice” by the Professional and Organizational Development Network (POD) in Higher Education. The study appeared in Change (September/October 2008). In 2009, DeZure and her MSU colleagues Cindi Young and Allyn Shaw won the 2009 POD Innovation Award for a Mid-Career Faculty Orientation – “From Associate Professor to Professor: Productive Decision-Making at Mid-Career.” At the workshop, mid-career faculty will learn strategies for planning their career path to full professor. Opening Doors Workshop

Opening Doors is a three-day retreat that provides a framework for increasing diversity awareness, enhancing a person's ability to create an inclusive organization, and facilitating personal and professional growth. The next session will be held September 10-12, 2014. Opening Doors is open and free to all county-based, off-campus, and campus-based faculty and staff within CALS. Through a long-standing partnership with the Office of Institutional Equity and Diversity, several seats are also reserved for NC State employees who are not in CALS. The workshop is absolutely free and includes all meals, lodging, and educational materials. Registration for Opening Doors is available online. Please direct questions to LaTosha Bradley.

Year-End Celebrations

Diversity Awards, Program Certificates, and Student Awards to be Presented This Week

The Office for Institutional Equity and Diversity will host three major annual celebrations this week: the Chancellor's Creating Community Awards, the Equal Opportunity Institute Graduation, and the African American Cultural Center's Ebony Harlem Awards.

The Chancellor's Creating Community Awards recognizes faculty, staff, colleges, students, and student organizations that have made exceptional efforts and contributions in the areas of equity, diversity, and inclusion. Nominations were collected from the NC State community in an open nomination process conducted by OIED's Diversity and Inclusion unit starting in February. The program will be held on Tuesday, April 22, 2014 in the new Talley Student Union Ballroom at 11:00AM.

The Equal Opportunity Institute Graduation celebrates graduates of the year-long Equal Opportunity Institute, an award-winning certificate program that is open to all and free to NC state faculty, staff, and students. EOI has been educating members of the community about equal opportunity and diversity for over a decade. This year, a record number of nearly 100 graduates will receive their EOI certificate, and 20 returning EOI graduates will be recognized as EOI graduate scholars for completing additional courses. The program will be held on Thursday, April 24, 2014 at 10:00AM in the Hunt Library Multi-Purpose Room.

The Ebony Harlem Awards will be held in Witherspoon Center's Washington Sankofa Room on Friday, April 25, 2014 at 6:00PM. This annual celebration honors outstanding students who are members of student organizations affiliated with NC State's African American Cultural Center.

These celebrations honor the hard work and dedication of those at NC State who have worked to make NC State even better! Congratulations to all the honorees.

Denim Day is April 23: Wear Denim, Raise Sexual Assault Awareness

In 1992, an 18-year-old in Italy was raped on the side of the road by her driving instructor. She pressed charges and won her case. The instructor appealed, and in 1999, the Italian High Court overturned the conviction. A member of the High Court declared that since the victim wore very tight jeans, the instructor could not have removed them himself; therefore, the victim must have willingly participated. Women of the Italian legislature protested the decision by wearing jeans. As news of the decision spread, so did the protest. Get your Denim Day button at the Women's Center in Harrelson Hall, Room 324 or on the Brickyard on April 23, 2014 from 10:00AM-2:00PM, and join us as we wear denim.

Giving B(l)ack: Demystifying the Philanthropic Highway, will be hosted by the NC State African American Cultural Center to engage a variety of givers, change agents, practitioners, concerned citizens, and researchers to think more strategically about how to utilize individual and collective giving to enhance the impact of their multiple community building and change efforts. So often, the gatherings and conversations about giving and philanthropy focus on those with significant wealth and reputational capital, excluding those individuals and groups engaged in giving and philanthropy that is taking place under the radar of many institutions in the business and practice of giving. Please join us on June 19-22, 2014 for this important conference. Conference workshop tracks will include: Demystifying Individual Giving; Demystifying Collective Giving; Demystifying Strategic Philanthropic Tools; and Demystifying the ASK/Cultivation /Fund Development.
